Changes in Cave Sedimentation Mechanisms During the Late Quaternary: An Example From the Lower Cerovačka Cave, Croatia

چکیده

During archeological excavations in the Lower Cerovačka Cave (Mt. Velebit, Croatia), test trench penetrated to a depth of 1.8 m. An undisturbed sequence sediments was exposed. Considering that caves represent highly efficient sediment traps it possible recognize changes depositional mechanisms during Pleistocene–Holocene period. Using multiproxy approach, mineralogical, petrographic, and biostratigraphic characterization cave performed. Facies analysis revealed several stages development clastic filling channels. Allochthonous origin assumed. Sedimentation took place under various conditions from pronounced cold dry climate Pleistocene base profile, humid periods with anthropogenic influence Holocene at very top profile. Although traditionally these were believed be age, here for first time stratigraphic calibration profile has been performed based on luminescence dating detrital radiometric speleothems.

The late Neandertal supraorbital fossils from Vindija Cave, Croatia: a biased sample?

The late Neandertal sample from Vindija (Croatia) has been described as transitional between the earlier Central European Neandertals from Krapina (Croatia) and modern humans. However, the morphological differences indicating this transition may rather be the result of different sex and/or age compositions between the samples. This study tests the hypothesis that the metric differences between ...

Study on the Antibacterial Effect from Moonmilk Pindul Cave, Indonesia

Background and Objective: Antibiotic resistance is the ability of microbes to survive antibiotic exposure with standard doses. Regular updating of antibiotics is one solution to overcome antibiotic resistance. One source with potential new antibiotics is moonmilk from caves because it contains various bacteria proven to have antibacterial activity. The objective of the present study is to explo...

Quaternary cave levels in peninsular Florida

The hypothesis that caves in the Florida Peninsula are tied to Quaternary sea levels was proposed by hydrogeologists, without data, some 40 years ago. The hypothesis is a version of glacial control of cave levels, which is the logical combination of the water-table theory of speleogenesis and the concept that base level positions the water table. At the USA type example of glacial control of ca...

A high-coverage Neandertal genome from Vindija Cave in Croatia.

To date, the only Neandertal genome that has been sequenced to high quality is from an individual found in Southern Siberia. We sequenced the genome of a female Neandertal from ~50,000 years ago from Vindija Cave, Croatia, to ~30-fold genomic coverage. She carried 1.6 differences per 10,000 base pairs between the two copies of her genome, fewer than present-day humans, suggesting that Neanderta...
